  • Oh, Fortuna, blind, heedless goddess, I am strapped to your wheel!

When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him. -Jonathan Swift I have recommended this book to just about everyone who is looking for a really great read. This is one cast of characters that you are unlikely to forget. Ignatius J. Reilly, hero and anti-hero of this classic by John Kennedy Toole, is an absurd and horrifyingly lovable character, who references Boethius and longs for the days of kings and queens. We follow him through many trials: forced into the world of work and attempting to insight a workers' revolt, being thrown to the indecencies of the French Quarter as a hot dog vendor in a pirate costume, and organizing a political movement that could change the world! Set in 1960s New Orleans and capturing the sound, smell, and flavor of the city and its inhabitants, this farce is sure to make you laugh out loud!

  • Simply one of the greatest and funniest American novels ever written

    Karthik T. - 2 years 2 months ago

This is one of the greatest novels written in the United States of America in the second half of the 20th century. By now most people know the incredible story of how John Kennedy Toole won the Pulitzer posthumously because after his suicide, his mother persistently nagged deciders to publish this book, but that has nothing to do with its greatness. Ignatius J. Reilly is one of the greatest characters in literary history; an American original. His escapades unroll like a tumbling river and he's way funnier than his compatriot Holden Caulfield. This is a desert island novel. A book you always keep; a book you never forget; a book that makes you happy to be alive and makes you wish you could buy a scotch at the old Napoleon piano bar in the French Quarter for John Kennedy Toole. Brooklyn, New Orleans and craziness.
