Overview

Book one of the New York Times-bestselling All Souls trilogy--"a wonderfully imaginative grown-up fantasy with all the magic of Harry Potter and Twilight" (People).

Now " a] hot show that's like Twilight meets Outlander" (Thrillist) airing Sundays on AMC and BBC America, as well as streaming on Sundance Now and Shudder.

Deborah Harkness's sparkling debut, A Discovery of Witches, has brought her into the spotlight and galvanized fans around the world. In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and a descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782, deep in Oxford's Bodleian Library. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she navigates with her leading man, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont.

Harkness has created a universe to rival those of Anne Rice, Diana Gabaldon, and Elizabeth Kostova, and she adds a scholar's depth to this riveting tale of magic and suspense. The story continues in book two, Shadow of Night, and concludes with The Book of Life.

  • Vampire and Witch Romance Done Right

    Christina K. - 1 year 4 months ago

Discovery of Witches is the first book in the All Souls trilogy and it is a great start to an even better series. The book follows a reluctant witch, Diana Bishop, and a vampire with a mission, Matthew Clairmont, as they uncover the truth about the origin of witches, vampires and demons. Diana and Matthew quickly fall in love as they delve deeper and deeper into the mystery surrounding the Book of Life. The characters in this book are written with such depth and creativity that you quickly feel a connection with not just the main two characters, but with all the people they encounter along the way. If you are looking for a new series I highly recommend Discovery of Witches.

  • A Scholarly approach to "paranormal romance"

    Carol P. - 7 years 4 months ago

Though listed as fiction Deborah Harkness' All Souls Trilogy spans a variety of genres with elements of paranormal romance, fantasy, horror, history and science. Harkness herself is an award-winning historian and professor of European history and the history of science. A Discovery of Witches introduces the reader to a rich world of witches, vampires, and fae with a scholarly setting in the Bodleian Library of the University of Oxford. Whirlwind romance, alchemical texts, spell casting, ghosts, and a war of ages follows though not necessarily in that order. Excellent and fun. Happy Reading.

  • Witches, vampires and ancient manuscripts, oh my!

    Susan S. - 7 years 11 months ago

What a fun read! A witch and a vampire meet and fall in love, even though it's forbidden. Their common search for a lost, secret manuscript creates all sorts of challenges. To complicate things further, Diana, the witch, has actively avoided magic her whole life, which means she's just now learning how to use her power. One of the best things about this story is that it is book one of a trilogy!
