Overview

Known for its autobiographical elements, A Farewell to Arms tells the story of Frederic Henry, an American lieutenant stationed in Italy during World War I. There, he meets and falls in love with an English nurse, Catherine Barkley. Though the horrors of the war threaten to pull them apart, Henry and Catherine face impossible odds to be together. With sparing prose and a realistic account of war, Hemingway portrays the existential disillusionment of the Lost Generation in the postwar years.

A classic, a well told story of the new 20th century man.

A Farewell to Arms embodies human imperfection to a T. From war to irrational human attachment, the novel follows two character that you are not really rooting for but understand and thus connect to nonetheless. This book was banned in Italy for its painfully vivid depiction of Italy's retreat from Caporetto. #BannedBook #RequiredReading

An absolutely wonderful read. Hemingway's seemingly simplistic writing hides deep meaning beneath, and this book, no matter how many times I read it, makes me smile, laugh, and cry. The ending is one of the most haunting ones out there.
