Overview

The mega-bestseller with more than 1.5 million readers that is soon to be a major television series

"The novel buzzes with the energy of numerous adventures, love affairs, and] twists of fate." --The Wall Street Journal

He can't leave his hotel. You won't want to.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Rules of Civility--a transporting novel about a man who is ordered to spend the rest of his life inside a luxury hotel.

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel's doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count's endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.

  • Truly a Gentleman

    Kristen B. - 3 years ago

The year is 1922. Count Alexander Rostov is sentenced to live out the rest of his life under house arrest in a hotel in Moscow. Throughout the novel, we see different snippets of the Counts life as he lives out his sentence. It is the story of a true gentleman. So often we read stories about heroes or really messed up people that do really messed up things. A Gentleman in Moscow is just about a regular guy doing regular things, holding to his principles and always treating others with respect. It was so refreshing. But to be honest, for about 95% of the book, I was thinking, this book is really good, but I don't see why everyone absolutely loves it. Things got a tiny bit confusing towards the end, but then everything is revealed and the end takes a complete and fabulous turn, making this book a solid 5 stars! Read this book if youre looking for a pleasantly surprising historical fiction novel.

  • Excellent book with charming main character is spectacular in audio.

A terrific book about an aristocrat under house arrest in a posh hotel after the Russian revolution. I picked it up expecting a spy book, but though it isn't, the main character is so resourceful and resilient, he tends to charm the reader despite expectations. I really loved the audio of this though I was unfamiliar with the narrator prior.
