    What begins as the quintessential fantasy adventure complete with wicked witches, beautiful orphans, and a mighty hero quickly reveals itself to be a dystopian sci-fi. Sheri S. Tepper is not a subtle writer. Irreverently utilizing clich and the all too familiar remains of our culture, this book is 100% a social commentary masquerading as a really entertaining fantasy adventure. Whether or not you agree with her, Tepper's unique plotlines and clever, dynamic prose never fail to keep me at the edge of my seat.
