Sherlock Holmes has been back in style lately, so when I saw A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro, a young adult twist on the old Arthur Conan Doyle stories, I wasnt all that surprised. I was surprised, however, at how much I enjoyed this new take on the Holmes/Watson adventures. Jamie Watson was not happy to leave England, but he knew that coming to this particular Connecticut boarding school would offer a silver lining. Charlotte Holmes the great-great-great granddaughter of the infamous Sherlock was enrolled there. Jamie named for his own great-great-great grandfather, Dr. James Watson had always harbored a secret fantasy of becoming best friends with Charlotte and, like their celebrated ancestors, becoming famed for solving impossible crimes. After some initial awkwardness, the pair become genuine friends, but Jamie expected Charlotte to be a secretive, addicted, obsessive mess, and he certainly hadnt expected someone with a nasty grudge to frame her and by association, him for murder. When classmates are attacked, all the evidence points to them, but Holmes and Watson are on the case, and the culprit cant stay hidden for long under Charlotte Holmes astute deductions!
