A prime example of it's publisher Orbit's ability to discover unusual and unusually great stories is the simultaneously spine-tickling and wonderful American Elsewhere. In Mona, the protagonist of the book, you'll discover an ex-police officer with a tragic backstory, which the author (Robert Jackson Bennett) does a truly fantastic job of alluding to and drawing from without pushing his reader's face into it. Mona is an amazingly grounded, but still hopeful, character that makes it easy to wish for her to succeed in her journey. She is powerful and yet immensely vulnerable. The journey in question is to Wink, New Mexico, which she discovers whilst attempting to re-connect with her deceased mother. This is a place unlike any other; it is a town not found on any map and is usually only associated with a mysterious, now-defunct scientific building. Wink is a place that is both whimsically curious in nearly every respect while seeming to hide some great overriding terror, just beneath a seemingly perfect veneer of Americana lost in time. At times terrifying and filled with wonder, those looking for their next underappreciated science fiction/horror gem need look no further.
