One of The New York Times's Ten Best Books of the Year

Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction

An NPR "Great Reads" Book, a Chicago Tribune Best Book, a Washington Post Notable Book, a Seattle Times Best Book, an Entertainment Weekly Top Fiction Book, a Newsday Top 10 Book, and a Goodreads Best of the Year pick.

A powerful, tender story of race and identity by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the award-winning author of Half of a Yellow Sun.

Ifemelu and Obinze are young and in love when they depart military-ruled Nigeria for the West. Beautiful, self-assured Ifemelu heads for America, where despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple with what it means to be black for the first time. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London. Fifteen years later, they reunite in a newly democratic Nigeria, and reignite their passion--for each other and for their homeland

  • The Discovery of Constructed Race

    Kelley D. - 3 years 10 months ago

The book follows the story of two Nigerian people living abroad. They discover that outside their country is a constructed concept of 'blackness' that they had never experienced in their own society. Spectacularly written, the book challenges the reader's precepts about culture and race with every page. This book will alter your schemas.

  • Nigerian girl makes good in America, then returns to Nigeria.

    Jill W. - 4 years 6 months ago

This book makes an excellent book club book. There is so much to discuss: racism, Nigerian history, blogging, sex and romance, family dynamics, religion. This book is full of good, juicy topics for a great discussion. Adichie is a clever writer, in describing one character, she uses a play on words and concepts: There was something immodest about her modesty; it announced itself. This is a very full novel, with a unique voice. It is well worth the read!

  • Breaking down love and racism.

    Kristen B. - 5 years 3 months ago

At its heart, Americanah, winner of the 2013 National Book Critics Circle Award and selected as one of the 10 Best Books of the year by the New York Times Book Review, is a true love story. Ifemelu and Obinze are dating when Ifemelu moves to America. After searching for a job in America and having a bad experience, Ifemleu and Obinze fall apart. Americanah takes on the complex issues of race and love and breaks them down into simple ones - showing that there is nothing complex about either issue. Love is simply love and racism is simply hatred. This novel will surely become a great American classic.
