I devoured this book in one breathless sitting. Celestial and Roy are a couple, newishly married, who have their whole world torn apart when Roy is falsely accused and convicted of rape. A world that had once been their oyster seems to turn its back on them overnight. Roy is sentenced to 12 years in prison and the rest of the book is about how both parties deal with their separation. The beauty of this book lies in its representation of the situation and characters. Tayari Jones is an amazing writer, and she's made these characters so real, so complex, that it's hard not to be affected by the situations they face. This book is heartbreaking in its brutal look at the way our society throws away promising young citizens, but so hopeful in showing that there is a way forward. This book is a definite classic in the making.
