Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns is simply the most important graphic novel ever. This imagining of a future Batman after a 10 year absence is responsible (along with "Watchmen") for the comic related world being what it is today. This story influenced Tim Burton in his (what at the time was considered) much darker version of Batman when he made his Michael Keaton movies. This is the comic that got Kevin Smith back into comics after he had sold his collection. You owe it to yourself if you have never read it to check it out.#summerreading
Frank Miller is definitely one of the best Batman writers, and this story is his take on Batman’s early years. The comic focuses a lot on how Batman got to be the crime fighter he is, but it also shows us how Jim Gordon came to be. It is a must read for Batman fans and a good companion piece to The Dark Knight Returns.
