Between Two Thorns is the first book of Emma Newman's Split Worlds trilogy. The author has also published numerous short stories in this universe. I picked it up because I was attracted to the interesting dark cover art and the plot keywords on the back cover of the book. (They are as follows:[ Gargoyle Sidekick | Finder's Keepers | A Rose By Any Other Name | Manners ]) Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere has long been one of my favorite novels, and Newman's Split Worlds evoked a similar contradiction in modern rationalism and Victorian traditionalism. Her characters are unexpected and multi-faceted, and she's not afraid to let them be extremely flawed. This book is definitely the first in the trilogy, and the plot thickens without being resolved. Her world is well-developed, and simultaneously full of floating fae magic and gritty morbid plot twists. Her characters grow in realistic and rarely pretty ways, although much of their growth is reserved for later in the series. She switches plot points and point-of-view throughout the series, which to me further emphasized the capricious fae and those in their thrall. The creatures in her world were inventive and enjoyable to follow. I'll be keeping up with whatever Newman writes next! I can't recommend this book enough to anyone looking for a fresh new voice in old school fantasy.
