Ta-Nehisi Coates, fresh off his recent success of "Between the World and Me", has taken over the mantle of the Black Panther. Coates breathes new life into the character and his kingdom of Wakanda with rich storytelling and a fresh take on a classic character. The quality of writing makes it a perfect entry point for those new to comics and graphic novels, young and old.
HPB Staff ReviewBlack Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet, Book 1 collects issues #1-4 of the new BLACK PANTHER comic series, now written by journalist, author, and comic super-fan, Ta-Nehisi Coates ("Between the World and Me," the Atlantic, New York Times). The people of Wakanda are restless. A group that refers to themselves as The People is stirring trouble and danger in Wakanda, which Black Panther tries to quall the uprising but other factors turn against him. Panther has a difficult time focusing on how to restore his home of Wakanda because his heart is pulled in too many directions... I adore Coates' journalism and personal writing, and it truly is a pleasure to see him bloom as a comics writer to tell the story of the first black superhero and of his country. Coates weaves political, philosophical and historical undertones in his Black Panther comic, beginning an important dialogue about the power of comics and storytelling.
