Book 10 of the Elemental Masters series (which begins with book 1-The Fire Rose) delivers another tale spawned from an old fairytale and taken to the next level. Rosamund is an Earth Master, which means she has magical abilities tied to the element of earth, unlike others who use air, fire or water. Most earth mages are tied into healing powers, but Rosamund is all about using her power to stomp the bad guys. Her tale begins much like Little Red Riding Hood, then goes to a whole different kind of werewolf hunting tale as the little girl scared of the big bad wolf grows up to be a magic-wielding, gun-toting gal who cares little for conventional or traditional female roles. Her practical and laid-back attitude might scare off some nobles, but it keeps her grounded and able to be realistic about what is going on around her. She tries to remain demure and proper in public, but when really nasty creatures are doing unspeakable things and people are in peril, she trades in her skirts for pants, straps on her guns, jumps on a horse and rides out hell-bent for leather to the rescue.
