First published in France by Glenat, the book has won several awards, including the Audience Prize at the Angouleme International Comics Festival, Europe's largest.

The live-action, French-language film version of the book, entitled Blue Is the Warmest Color, won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2013. Directed by director Abdellatif Kechiche and starring Lea Seydoux and Adele Exarchopoulos, the film generated both wide praise and controversy. It will be released in the US through Sundance Selects/IFC Films.

    I read this book within an hour, and by the time I was done with it I was crying. It is so unexpectedly sad! The story is about two girls who meet completely by chance one day and begin a very long, emotional, and complicated relationship together. We learn that Clementine is very confused by her feelings for another girl, while Emma is afraid to get too close to a girl who isn't being honest about what she wants or who she is. These two girls endure a lot together and right before they think they've been defeated, tragedy strikes to make them remember why they fell in love in the first place. It's really an amazing story and it's told with beautiful illustrations. One of the best graphic novels I've ever read, for sure.
