Tina Fey walks us through her time as a small time improvisor, her time on SNL, and her classic show 30 Rock. Always funny and always honest, Tina provides an insight into being a quirky girl in a male dominated profession. This would be a great and lighthearted book club book as well. Who wouldn't love to discuss the funny individual that is Tina Fey.
HPB Staff ReviewI have read Tina Fey's Bossypants four times since it was published in 2011. Fey manages to tell the story of her life in comedy in such a relatable and hilarious way that I'm sure I'll continue to re-read it and recommend it to everyone I know for the next decade or so. Not only does Fey recount funny moments from her childhood (like being accidentally abandoned by her father as he attempts to return a carpet cleaner) but also behind-the-scenes moments from her time on the hit shows Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock (like the day she appeared for the first time as Sarah Palin on SNL, shot an episode of 30 Rock with Oprah, and planned her daughter Alice's fifth birthday party). I especially related to the uncertainty Fey felt in college and her post-graduation life and her devotion to finding the humor in everything around her. If you enjoy Bossypants (or laughter in general), I also recommend Mindy Kaling's Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and Amy Poehler's Yes Please.
HPB Staff ReviewIf you love Tina Fey, you will love Bossypants. She's brilliant and well-spoken, just a tad sardonic. Graduated college a virgin and loves to tell it. Plus, just look at the cover. She is a powerful woman in a male-dominated industry. You go, girl! I laughed out loud and at moments, wanted to fight someone for her. #SummerReading
So I bought this unsure of what I was about to read. The cover had me confused, but my love of Tina's work on SNL, 30 Rock, and Mean Girls was real. So as the story goes, the first chapter in I'm shocked just by how amazing this is. Her WIT, humor, and realness practically leaped off every page. I snorted so loud of laughter each chapter. I loved it so much that my mother read it and she couldn't help but fall in love with the book too. It's a bit embarrassing that a celebrity written book is one of my favorites reads, but Tina deserves all the credit. Make it your #SummerReading!
This is one of the quintessential comedy books in recent memory. So many friends and colleagues had already read it by the time I got to it, but this along with the audiobook are hilarious and engaging. Tina is one of the smartest comedians and writers working today and she recalls her life and childhood with just as much humor, even with some touching and heartfelt words. Highly recommend. #SummerReading
