When a project meant to expand the human footprint beyond the solar system goes awry, a paradise meant to be the dominion of Man toils under the intricate web of sentient spiders enhanced with humanity's capacity for community and penchant towards self-preservation. 3000 years later, when the dregs of humanity finally escape the poisoned earth, the last band of refugees must best the world of spiders and the mad-god AI who has raised them in her image. The Children of Time is a perilous journey through the hubris of a dying humanity perfect for anyone who dreams of escape but finds their first steps hampered by fear of the unknown; sometimes the devil you know is worse.
HPB Staff ReviewThis is one of those stories that leaves you with something after you finish reading it; something beautiful. Tchaikovsky mystically gifts the reader with a deeper understanding of what it means to be a conscious creature, and how beautiful it is in an empty universe. All of this is told through a plot driven narrative rather than a character driven one. This is one of those stories that blurs the arbitrary line between genre fiction and literary fiction. It should go on school reading lists- far superior to Ender’s Game (as far as sci-fi school reads go) but probably never will because of the the f-word count and sex references. Just read it.
One of my new sci fi favorites! Hard sci fi right up there with the greats: asimov, dick, heinlein, etc.
Children of Time offers a fantastic rethinking of the 'first contact' story line common in Sci-Fi. Tchaikovsky is a nimble writer, providing thoughtful explorations of human and alien societies as they slowly encounter one another. A remarkably taught and philosophical work. Highly recommended.
