Overview

Married to a convert herself, Anita Diamant provides advice and information that can transform the act of conversion into an extraordinary journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth.
Here you will learn how to choose a rabbi, a synagogue, a denomination, a Hebrew name; how to handle the difficulty of putting aside Christmas; what happens at the mikvah (ritual bath) or at a hatafat dam brit (circumcision ritual for those already circumcised); how to find your footing in a new spiritual family that is not always well prepared to receive you; and how not to lose your bonds to your family of origin. Diamant anticipates all the questions, doubts, and concerns, and provides a comprehensive explanation of the rules and rituals of conversion.

Anita Diamant's Choosing a Jewish Life is a great starting place for those who find themselves considering converting to Judaism, a great guide for friends and families, and even those who are looking for more information on Jewish conversion in general. Simple and straight forward, Diamant uses lived experiences of her husband's as well as other individuals when it comes to finding a synagogue and a rabbi that will help guide one through conversion. I found it helpful in explaining the basics of Jewish life (both material and spiritual) without being completely bogged down in terminology while still being clear and respectful. While it seems her main audience is those who are converting because they are getting married or even dating someone who is Jewish, even those who are taking the journey for themselves will glean excellent information from this book. I highly recommend this book for anyone who finds themselves pulled to Judaism.
