HPB Staff ReviewI never really was a big fan of the Cinderella fairytale, but I am a big Disney fan so I had to pick up this book. I ended up reading it cover to cover in two days. Cinder is the best cyborg mechanic in New Beijing whose best friend is a sassy android. She meets the prince within the first chapter of the book and things just spiral from there. From the Prince Kai trying to find a cure for the plague that is wiping out thousands of people to Cinder discovering that she is immune to the plague all together. Not to mention there are those called Lunars who live on the moon and have the ability to control the minds of humans, manipulating what they see and controlling their actions. This book was way better than I anticipated and a great new spin of the classic fairytale.
HPB Staff ReviewA pretty girl working to care for her stepmother and stepsisters, a handsome prince who flirts with her in the marketplace, and an up-coming royal ball. Think you know how this story is going to end? Don't bet on it. Cinder is new Beijing's premier mechanic, which is why Prince Kai sought her out to fix his "tutor" android. What he doesn't tell her is this android holds secrets that may save him from a devastating marriage to the tyrannical lunar queen, who uses blackmail and brainwashing to get what she wants. What Cinder doesn't tell Prince Kai is that she is a cyborg, with a mysterious past. When Cinder uncovers information that Kai's life is in danger, she must become her own fairy godmother in order to save him. In doing so, she discovers secrets about her own past that may destroy her.
HPB Staff ReviewCinder is a very different take on a retelling of Cinderella, as the story develops more and more into a beautiful piece of young adult sci-fi/fantasy; it draws the reader into the misfortunes of this poor cyborg girl. Cinder starts out as being about as far from the "typical Cinderella" as possible: she's a grungy, greasy mechanic who wants absolutely nothing to do with anything girly, but as the book series continues, she develops into a more take charge role model and leader for young women everywhere. She reinforces the idea that you don't have to be girly and that being strong and brave are okay. Cinder spends much of her time hiding her cyborg parts for fear of discovery and the looks of scorn and distrust she'd receive from others, thus mimicking the fear that people in minority grounds feel every day. This book and subsequent series do an excellent job of revamping an old story into something more modern and something that can be relatable to people of today while still showcasing the flare of science fiction!
HPB Staff ReviewI was shocked to see it signed by the author -- wasn’t expecting that. It’s become one of my prized books now.
