Overview

Dead Man's Walk is the first, extraordinary book in the epic Lonesome Dove tetralogy, in which Larry McMurtry breathed new life into the vanished American West and created two of the most memorable heroes in contemporary fiction: Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call.
As young Texas Rangers, Gus and Call have much to learn about survival in a land fraught with perils: not only the blazing heat and raging tornadoes, roiling rivers and merciless Indians but also the deadly whims of soldiers. On their first expeditions--led by incompetent officers and accompanied by the robust, dauntless whore known as the Great Western--they will face death at the hands of the cunning Comanche war chief Buffalo Hump and the silent Apache Gomez. They will be astonished by the Mexican army. And Gus will meet the love of his life.

So I love Larry McMurtry. Love Lonesome Dove. Read it at least four times. Was glad to hear that there are four Lonesome Dove books in a series….seriously, news to me. I read Streets of Laredo, supposed to be second in the series and was glad to be reacquainted with some of the characters from Lonesome Dove. But Mox Mox? The fiend that burns people alive, and nearly did that to Lorie! What he did? Gave me nightmares. Dead Man is the next in the series and when I got a few chapters in, when I read the atrocities committed (routinely, one would think), by the indians against settlers? I said, my peace of mind is not worth this. I sold the book back to Half Price after only getting to one atrocity and decided I was done with that book and finished with the series. It’s probably realistic historical but nightmare inducing so I stopped. You might be okay with it; it’s fictional, after all. Nobody reads the Travels of Jamie McPhee anymore, which was a popular book in its time, but suppress

I actually haven't read it yet but have read the other 3 novels in the series and really enjoyed them. I'm sure I will enjoy this one also.
