Charlie LeDuff investigates his hometown of Detroit, Michigan after a lengthy time away. What he finds is a city near ruin, going bankrupt and a municipality in shambles. He highlights the plight of Detroit firefighters as they struggle to battle the many blazes that plague the town with very limited (and outdated) resources. LeDuff then turns his attention to the Big Three, offering a front row seat to the drama that unfolded in 2008 as the auto makers filed for bankruptcy and lobbied for a government handout. He also takes on the city government that has been bankrupting Detroit since LeDuff's childhood. I would recommend this title for anyone interested in the decline of a major american city and the effects of cronyism on local governments.
