Winner of the AIGA + Design Observer 50 Books - 50 Covers competition

Science fiction's supreme masterpiece, Dune will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, it is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who will become the mysterious man known as Muad'Dib. Paul's noble family is named stewards of Arrakis, whose sands are the only source of a powerful drug called "the spice." After his family is brought down in a traitorous plot, Paul must go undercover to seek revenge, and to bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream. A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction.

  • The spice must flow!

Frank Herbert's Dune is a classic science fiction book - and for good reason. The main character is Paul Atreides, whose royal family is given stewardship over the desert planet Arrakis. Arrakis is the sole producer of "spice," the most valuable substance in the universe. Paul and his family must fight to keep ownership of the planet from their enemies, House Harkonnen, who seek to take the planet by covert means. Political intrigue and low-tech science fiction feature heavily in this book. It's a classic worth checking out!

  • Sandworms, spice, and space

    Jay P. - 2 years 7 months ago

Warm feelings aside for the "so bad, it's good" movie based on Herbert's seminal work, the book is much more richly detailed and fast-paced. Featuring believable knife-fighting sequences, drug-induced visions of the future, giant sandworms and more, this book is great. The opening salvo in a long-running series, this is where it all begins. By the end of the book you'll anxiously await sitting down with the next one so you can get that proverbial grain of sand out of your stillsuit.

  • A sci-fi epic that moves like a sandstorm

    Jesse B. - 3 years 3 months ago

I can't remember the last time I read anything this intricate that at the same time was so vague that it compelled me to keep reading. This book has enough power hungry factions in it that George R.R. Martin would politely golf clap after putting it down. While more of the story does follow 15 year old Paul Atreidies, you do get the inner thoughts of all the other major characters as well. The majority of the action takes place on Arrakis, a desert planet seemingly void of life except for behemoth man eating worms that are drawn to any vibrations in the sand. Why does anyone live there, you ask? The Spice! Make sure you have a glass of water next to you when you read this, you're going to get thirsty.

  • Pleasantly Surprised

I loved dune. I only read it because i'm making my way through the BBC's list of a 100 books you should read before you die. SciFi is not my normal type of book either. However, this is such a perfect story that captures the reader and immerses them in the world. I couldnt put it down!

  • Absolutely must read

This is an absolutely amazing book. The way that it allows the reader to know the thoughts and reasons behind each characters actions and its world building are all captivating I found my self reading the first hundred and fifty pages after I cracked it open. It lives up to the hype as one of the best in not the best Sifi books ever written. #springPicks
