The fifth edition of Dungeons and Dragons is a departure from the traditional learning curve of the game and instead focuses on accessibility for players new and old. The possibilities are endless with the loose bounds of the rules and the infinite landscape of your imagination. When it comes to Dungeons and Dragons, all you need is a set of dice, this book, and a couple of friends and you'll be up and adventuring in no time! Fifth edition is the system featured in most popular Let's Play games, such as Critical Role, the Adventure Time and Dimension 20. Pick up your sword, arcane focus, and Player's Handbook and get playing!
HPB Staff ReviewThe Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition Player's Handbook is a great reboot of the classic role-playing game. After the rules explosion of the 3rd edition and the card-game mechanics of the 4th, this new version simplifies Dungeons & Dragons so that players and gamemasters have freedom to improvise, much as they did in the 2nd edition. The layout and artwork are excellent, and the book is sturdy and well-suited to holding up to repeated and frantic searches for the just the right spell! Roll for initiative!
HPB Staff ReviewWith the newest edition of their classic role-playing game, Dungeons and Dragons, Wizards of the Coast have outdone themselves. An excellent tool for both the first-time gamer and the lifelong player, the 5e Player's Handbook takes the best of previous editions and refines it. Character building is intuitive and fun, the battle rules are refined and simplified (after the overly-complex and intimidating battle structure of previous editions), and the world-building is limitless. With easy-to-use charts, a thorough index, and well-designed chapters, the Player's Handbook guides the reader through everything they need to know to start a campaign, from combat to learning new skills, from becoming a Battlemaster Barbarian to a master assassin. As a first-time player, long-time fan, I found the 5e Player's Handbook an invaluable tool as I start my first campaign.
HPB Staff ReviewThe Fifth Edition of Dungeons & Dragons is a return to form for the franchise. Players of older editions (even 4E) will find something to love, as the newest ruleset incorporates many of the best ideas from the earlier versions while adding some new things to help improve the game. One of the best new mechanics for 5E is the Advantage/Disadvantage dice whereby a character who attempts an action in a favorable/unfavorable situation rolls two d20s and keeps the best/worst of the two rolls, respectively. The mechanic seems simple, but it does wonders to streamline the action by removing so much of the focus from calculating situational modifiers. The same could be said for 5E in general: things have been simplified and streamlined so that players and GMs can focus on having fun. This ethos extends to every corner of the game. Character classes are simplified; every class fills a niche and is playable - Bards and Monks are good again! Multiclassing is also simple, and each class has subclasses that help to round out in-between cases. This one is a win for Mike Mearls and the rest of the staff at Wizards of the Coast.
HPB Staff ReviewWhether you are new to Role Playing Games or a seasoned Adventurer, D&D 5th Edition is a stunning addition to the majestic line that began almost 50 years ago. The new rule set is a culmination of old mechanics and new age ideas that makes it easy for first timers to enjoy storytelling and adventuring and allow old timers (Grognards) to feel immersed in the world that they have always enjoyed. Grab some dice, paper, pencil and let your imagination overflow in the world of Dungeons and Dragons.
