Overview

Set in the same world as the New York Times bestselling Parasol Protectorate, this bestselling young adult steampunk series debut is filled with all the saucy adventure and droll humor Gail Carriger's legions of fans have come to adore.
Fourteen-year-old Sophronia is a great trial to her poor mother. Sophronia is more interested in dismantling clocks and climbing trees than proper manners--and the family can only hope that company never sees her atrocious curtsy. Mrs. Temminnick is desperate for her daughter to become a proper lady. So she enrolls Sophronia in Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality.

But Sophronia soon realizes the school is not quite what her mother might have hoped. At Mademoiselle Geraldine's, young ladies learn to finish...everything. Certainly, they learn the fine arts of dance, dress, and etiquette, but they also learn to deal out death, diversion, and espionage--in the politest possible ways, of course. Sophronia and her friends are in for a rousing first year's education.

  • James Bond school for Victorian ladies

    Sarah W. - 1 year 7 months ago

If you loved the Parasol Protectorate series you will love the Finishing School series! A floating school with teachers who are scientists, vampires, or werewolves (Oh, my!) This finishing school for young ladies secretly trains clever and adventurous girls in the arts of espionage with a Victorian twist. Written with the saucy and droll humor that is Gail Carriger, this book will have you laughing along with the characters as they learn the art of subterfuge and solve some mysteries of their own. A must read for any Steampunk fan!

  • Fun Steam-Punk mystery with a fantastic female lead

    Jennifer G. - 2 years 11 months ago

This is fantastic young adult fiction read that I happily recommend to friends and family in their forties. Gail writes in such a fun and witty style that I want to devour every little morsel her typewriter spits out. Etiquette and Espionage is the first in a series (get the whole thing, trust me) and it is a coming of age, steam-spunk, spy, romantic comedy, mystery, about the strength of friendships and believing in yourself. There are Werewolves, vampires, schools on hot air balloons, and these are the good guys! Age appropriate, no matter the age, and I highly recommend having a decent cuppa while you read. If you love it we can be besties! - Jenn

  • A steampunk world, containing a Victorian girls finishing school with a deadly curriculum

    Danielle N. - 5 years 6 months ago

Ms Carriger creates a deadly finishing school, in a steampunk Victorian reality. I would have "killed" to go to this school, curtsies, books on heads, and all. ; P "Etiquette & Espionage" is a wonderful start to a brilliant YA series, full of quirky humour and never ending bon mots. She creates characters that you instantly love, balanced by those you love to hate. Giving a home for young women valued for their intelligence and intelligencing skills. Wouldn't math class have been so much easier for you if you had to calculate how many deadly flower arrangements for your supper party, than standard algebra? #BannedBooks

  • Espionage is no excuse for poor manners. This steampunk mixes the two into an amusing tea that should be properly served.

Sophronia is not your usual 1850's gal in England. Of course this is not your typical England either. In this amusing steampunk novel Sophronia, who likes to take things apart and usually winds up in trouble, gets sent to "finishing school." This is not, however, your typical finishing school. These girls are being prepared to evaluate poisons, assassinate when necessary, and do a proper curtsy. The school is on a dirigible and is constantly changing location. Oh, and there are some supernatural teachers. Sophronia has found the perfect place to perfect her talents. This is a delightful romp with plenty of tongue-in-cheek humor. Even better, it is the first in a series. (I'm on book #2 right now.) I'm not usually a fan of steampunk, but I'll make an exception for this! #SummerReading
