Fahrenheit 451 is named after the degree temperature that books begin to burn. This dystopian novel is still considered a classic as we embark on the age of the internet and what, if anything, should be censored. The book follows a firefighter who's job it is to burn books and he gradually grows into a role of preserving knowledge.
HPB Staff ReviewIn a world where thinking for yourself is discouraged and reading is banned, Guy Montag is a cog in the machine. Working as a fireman -- a person who destroys and confiscates books from the public -- Guy upholds the very system that holds him back. But things change after a traumatic incident on the job. Shaken, Montag begins to question his work, his world, and himself. He starts to ask the questions we should all be asking: How much do I know? How much do I want to know? How much do I have the right to know?
HPB Staff ReviewThis was an absolute wonder to read. Most people I know read this in high school, but I have just read this as a 25 year old because I wanted to read more books that are considered "classics" (I know there are debates about what makes up classics, but I just wanted a good base to start with). I won't give to much information because I didn't know much about this book other than it was about a guy (his name is Guy Montag) who burned books for a society who believed books contained nothing but lies and creates chaos. This was all I knew, and I think that it made reading this book so much more enjoyable. (can I also just mention that this is a book talking about burning all banned books (aka all books), and is itself a banned book and has been burned in the past?) Even though this takes place in a different time and is about specific things, it is still applicable to our day and age, and will continue as time goes on. This has definitely become a new favorite of mine, and will have a special place on my bookshelf.
Tremendous book with amazing implications to 2020. #BannedBook
I have already read this book in high school but I am rereading it again after all these years. What I like about this book is that Clarisse McClellan taught Guy Montag that it wasn't okay to burn books and that you can read books and still find entertainment and I also like when she said "aren't firefighters suppose to put out fires instead of going to start them?" I recommend reading this book to everyone because it gets you to thinking about how you can make up your own rules! #BannedBook
