  • Loony for The Lunar Chronicles

Readers of The Lunar Chronicles have anticipated the story allowing a look into Queen Levana and her rise to power. You won't be disappointed. The story is a quick-read, with a straight-forward plotline, that expands on Levana's history. The story shows us what kind of character she was before her descent into tyrannical power. At first, I expected to feel empathy towards her, as many backstories with villains will elicit with readers. However, after reading this you feel no such thing. The problems Levana goes through later on in her life are entirely brought upon herself; except for the torture her sister put her through, emotionally, and physically. Because of this abuse, Levana grows up with a distorted view of her reality. It was interesting to see characters in the Lunar Chronicles make appearances, and find out the true story with what happened to Cinder, and her mother. Overall I would recommend this story, especially to readers who enjoy futuristic twists to classic fairy tales. If you choose not to read this story, it will not affect the original Lunar Chronicle storylines, but it would be helpful to get an insight into the villain's mind.

  • Ever wonder what made the Evil Queen evil?

    Julie S. - 1 year 10 months ago

Known as book 3.5 in the Lunar Chronicles, Fairest is the best prequel I have ever read, telling the story of the young Princess Levana and her rise to the Lunar throne. Fairest answers the questions every Lunar Chronicles fan wants to know, such as: what does Queen Levana really look like, who was her first husband, and what kind of a person would try to kill a 3-year-old child. After a childhood accident, Levana develops her Lunar gift of manipulation out of self-preservation and a deep desire to be loved. Meyer paints a tragic story of a tortured child, afraid to show her true self and realizing only too late that love can never be purchased with lies.

  • Mirror, mirror on the wall...

Fairest, the latest installment of the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, is a great addition to the series. In this book we learn about Queen Levana's murky past and her rise to power. Though it is not essential to have read the previous books in the series (Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress), having done so will enrich your reading experience with Fairest. See how young Levana navigated the royal lunar court after the untimely death of her parents, fell in love with a commoner, and set in motion the events that would lead to Cinder's story and intergalactic war. This reimagining of the Evil Queen from Snow White is not to be missed. I recommend this for fans of fairy tales and fantasy. Although it is a young adult book, there is no reason why adults cannot enjoy this as well. The characters are complex, and nothing is exactly what it seems. It made me very excited for Winter, the final installment of the series, due this Fall.
