Simply put, feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression. Bell Hooks, a prominent feminist author, academic, and social activist writes an engaging and transformative text. "Feminism is for Everybody" includes most of bell hooks' theory from her larger text, "Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center," that often seems daunting for its academic jargon. However, "Feminism is for Everybody" is written in accessible language, in a short book format, in a conversational manner -- so that truly anyone can pick up this book and understand the importance of feminism. She uses straightforward, simple prose, using historical context, literary references, as well as her own personal experience. It's a perfect introduction to feminism, and Hooks connects feminism to various aspects of life for men and women, discussing relationships, beauty, work, and more. Truly enlightening and a must-read! I adore this text and recommend it to all of my friends and family.
HPB Staff Review(rounded up to 5 from 4.5) This is a great book that is somewhere between general adult audience and intro to an upper level feminism course. It was intended to be for the general audience, but there is not a lot of defining of terms that she will use over and over. It is super short (4 hours audiobook) - making it less intimidating. hooks leaves very few stones unturned and criticizes the media and many feminists role letting the movement stall and in other places reverse course. This books gives easy to understand examples and doesn't get bogged down with policy, court cases, dates and, to a degree, names. I understood the white feminism issues part going in, but never thought about imperialist ideas when it came to American feminism, how harmful it was to center feminism on two ideas (equal pay and abortion) rather than dismantling sexism overall and also how abuse has been framed to the detriment of dismantling sexism. Only reason I didn't rate it a 5 star is because of the binary nature of the way she talked about gender and sex. She used them in many (if not all) circumstances interchangeably, and despite continually including lesbians and bisexual women there was no discussion of trans women at all. Excited to read bell hooks more. I was so intimidated that I started with this book since it is for general audience and made to be accessible to all. Probably buying copies for friends and family for the winter holiday. #springpicks
