This mystery is the first of the "Nero Wolfe" series; it really should be called the "Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin" series. The charm of the book is in the good writing, in the clever mysteries that rely on both armchair deduction and on-the-spot investigation. The interplay between the immobile genius Wolfe, who never leaves the house on business, and his assistant Goodwin, who handles the legwork and any action, makes the book satisfying for readers who enjoy either, and even more so for those who like both. The series gets even better, but the first book is the best place to start; if you like this there are dozens more waiting for you.
