Overview

"A master storyteller, Butler casts an unflinching eye on racism, sexism, poverty, and ignorance and lets the reader see the terror and beauty of human nature." - The Washington Post

This is the story of an apparently young, amnesiac girl whose alarmingly unhuman needs and abilities lead her to a startling conclusion: She is in fact a genetically modified, 53-year-old vampire. Forced to discover what she can about her stolen former life, she must at the same time learn who wanted-and still wants-to destroy her and those she cares for and how she can save herself.

  • The one vampire story worth reading

    Amanda W. - 6 years 4 months ago

If you're like me, and you shudder whenever you hear someone ask or mention a 'vampire story,' then you will be blown away by this unexpected gem by Octavia Butler. I hesitate even to classify it as a 'vampire story' due to Butler's unparalleled skill at social commentary through a fantastical lens. Fledgling follows the story of Shori, a 53-year-old human/vampire hybrid, the first of her kind. Shori wakes up without any knowledge of who or what she is and has to discover her place in the world through terrible trial and error. Fledgling questions everything from race to the definition of family, to the meaning of free will. Butler is a master of creating original and organic characters who acknowledge the big questions facing not only their world but the reader's world as well. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
