Another great read from Kate DiCamillo! The young girl Flora finds an unusual friend in a squirrel when her neighbor accidentally sucks the squirrel up with her new super-powered vacuum. This story builds upon unique friendships and looking to peoples strengths by finding comfort in their quirks. DiCamillo addresses divorced family situations by using the sage squirrel, Ulysses, whom unexpectedly gives voice to many of Flora's fears and helps rebuild dwindling relationships. It's a cute story that brings to the forefront difficult family relationships.
HPB Staff ReviewThis is a great book for fourth graders and above. The word choice in the book is excellent and high-level, and will help students strengthen their understanding of more complex vocabulary. The book will appeal to both boys and girls with a female heroin, a squirrel with super powers, and comic strips infused throughout the book. This is definitely a fun read!
