Overview

Whether you're a lifelong believer, a devout atheist, or someone who remains uncertain about the role of religion in our lives, this insightful manifesto will engage you with its provocative ideas.

With a close and studied reading of the major religious texts, Christopher Hitchens documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble Telescope's awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry of the double helix.

In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris's The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion.

  • Honest in opinion

I love this book! If you are familiar with Christopher Hitchens at all then you already know how eloquent his works are. If you are not, then be aware that he is unrelenting in voicing the truth as he sees it. As I was reading this I was laughing out loud at times, and agreeing at so many others. I could just hear how angry he was when talking about certain topics. If you are a fan of his then this is a must for your collection since he is sadly no longer with us. The world needs more people who are unafraid to speak so frankly, like George Carlin.

  • Fascinating examination of the negative impact religion

    John M. - 7 years 9 months ago

An endlessly fascinating examination of the negative impact religion has had upon both historical and modern existence. Unlike other atheists like Richard Dawkins, Hitchens does not mince words nor play nice. By the same token, however, he does not resort to crass obscenity or juvenile name calling. His arguments are succinct, biting, and altogether devastating. He uses both science and rationality like a laser scalpel to slice through one theocratic argument after another. An excellent read.
