I love most everything by Haruki Murakami and these two short novels are amazing. If you've read any of his other work, you won't be disappointed. It's a quick read, so if you're just looking to get started reading his work, this is a good place to start.
HPB Staff ReviewOut of print for nearly 30 years, the first two novels of the great post-modern Japanese writer Haruki Murakami, "Hear the Wind Sing" and "Pinball 1973" are finally available in the U.S. in a one-volume collection entitled "Wind/Pinball". The first two parts of the "Trilogy of the Rat" (the third novel, "A Wild Sheep Chase" is available separately), these stories detail the post-college adventures of an unnamed protagonist and his aimless best friend, known only as The Rat, as they spend most of their time drinking, listening to rock music, and looking for sex in early 1970s Tokyo. Murakami's works generally don't follow a typical story structure and those searching for a straightforward plot are bound to be disappointed. He's interested in quirky character moments, odd bits of humor, philosophical musings and weird tangents, which often make him seem like a Japanese counterpart to Kurt Vonnegut. "Pinball 1973" is especially surreal, a story which finds our hero sharing an apartment with two indistinguishable twin sisters while seeking a mythical pinball machine with great significance to him. Murakami's work may be an acquired one, but a palatable one for the right readers.
