  • Finding a home in your own skin is one of the most difficult things to do

On the surface, If I Was Your Girl has a straightforward, almost banal, premise. Amanda, the novel's protagonist, is a high school girl starting at a new school in a new town. She's pretty, intelligent, and just the right shade of nerdy--it doesn't take long before she's taken in by a group of friends. Nor does it take long for a couple of popular boys to start making cow-eyes at her. Boring sounding, right? In actuality, no. Here's what makes this coming-of-age, teenager-goes-to-new-school story different: Amanda is transgender. This adds a whole new layer of concerns and anxieties, both for Amanda and her parents. No one at her new school knows that Amanda was assigned a male gender at birth. Not only is she navigating new social circles, but she's also living as herself for the first time. What makes this book particularly special is how it's written both for LGBT readers and for non-LGBT readers. While the author, Meredith Russo, does use parts of the book for educational purposes, Amanda never loses her voice. I was never jarred out of the narrative by an info-dump, and Amanda never became a stand-in for all trans women. She's only ever herself, which is this novel's core strength. Additionally, the dedication and author's note were wonderfully heartfelt. I would recommend If I Was Your Girl to anyone of any demographic. It's a beautiful story with interesting and tangible characters and gives a much-needed voice to a hugely underrepresented group of people.

  • Love and authenticity in a small Tennessee town

    Ian L. - 7 years 3 months ago

If I Was Your Girl is one of the first young adult novels about a transgender character written by a transgender author. The story follows Amanda Hardy, a high schooler who has recently relocated to her father's house in Tennessee after a violent incident. Because none of her classmates know that she's transgender, Amanda has to learn to navigate the world while living as her authentic self. Russo's writing is brave and personal; it's obvious that the book is coming from a place close to her heart.
