I'll Give you the Sun is a fantastic choice for teens and adults alike. This story of twins growing apart after a loss, and finding their way back together through the trials of adolescence is a new twist on an old trope. This coming of age tale has a surreal plot that manages to feel fantastical and grounded in real emotion at the same time. The people inhabiting this world are truly characters, full of quirks and personality. In the hands of a less skilled author, these characters and this plot would feel overreaching and trite. But with Nelson's skill, they are formed into round, motivated characters who we feel for and wish inhabited our own world. Every time I thought I knew what this story was I was hit over the head again by a character perfectly relating an emotion I have had, but never before been able to articulate myself. My personal experiences are nothing like those in the book and yet I feel intimately connected to the characters of this book. When they were hurting I wanted to comfort them and when they experienced triumphs I felt pride. I have become a zealot for this book and recommend it to anyone who asks, and many who don't.
HPB Staff ReviewThis is one of my all time favorite YA fiction books. I think every young queer person should read it. I wish I had read it before coming out. Unlike many LGBTQ+ books, the main queer character's sexual orientation is not the sole focus of the book. He clearly struggles with it and struggles to name his feelings for his love interest, but the way Nelson portrays his love for his love interest is incredible. Also, there are a ton of other interesting plot lines throughout the book. I'd recommend it to anyone - especially people who like art (you'll see why once you read it!). #SpringPicks
I absolutely loved it! Captivating story about twins who’s unbreakable bond has broken. One of my favorite books and it will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Never before has a novel moved me quite like "I'll Give You The Sun". If you're looking for a book about the importance of family during times of loss, with a little LGBT mixed in, then you've picked up the right book. Plus there's hot bad boys, scandalous secrets, and romance. What more do you need really?
