Most of us have had the experience of being completely ignored, overlooked, made to wonder, "What, am I invisible?" In Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man," he expresses this profoundly as it happens to a Black man in the U.S., not just on occasion, but as the primary definer of his existence. His color is the first thing that people see and, based on that, his importance, stature, influence, and worth have been assessed and categorized before he even speaks. This is one of the books that should be required reading in high school. It could change a life. I suggest the careful reader to look for the use of the word "white" throughout the book for its association with "rightness." #BannedBook
