Written from the perspective of an older man looking back to his youth, Joyland is an engaging part coming-of-age tale/part mystery caper about a young man who finds himself working at a boardwalk amusement park, which becomes a refuge for his youthful disillusionment. There he becomes intrigued by a dark ride and the ghost which inhabits it, which leads to an exciting final act. With its suspenseful drive and a relatable tale about the major life events and pivotal decisions we all encounter in that strange, little gap between high school and college, Joyland is a surefire "one-nighter" read for a rainy evening.
HPB Staff ReviewPart of the Hard Case Crime series, and Stephen King's second installment therein, Joyland is a quick read perfect for summer. Taking place at an independent amusement park in the 1970s, the story follows college student Devin as he deals with being dumped by his first love and works his first summer as a carny. While learning the ropes, and taking his turns "wearing the fur," Devin comes to know the history of the park - and the gruesome murder that took place there just a few years prior. Only a slight departure from Stephen King's more traditional horror, Joyland still makes use of the supernatural to keep the story moving, and the reader intrigued. Great fun.
