Overview

A People magazine Best Book of Fall 2019
An Amazon Best Young Adult Book of 2019
F***ing outstanding.--Roxane Gay, New York Times bestselling author

Juliet Milagros Palante is a self-proclaimed closeted Puerto Rican baby dyke from the Bronx. Only, she's not so closeted anymore. Not after coming out to her family the night before flying to Portland, Oregon, to intern with her favorite feminist writer--what's sure to be a life-changing experience. And when Juliet's coming out crashes and burns, she's not sure her mom will ever speak to her again.

But Juliet has a plan--sort of. Her internship with legendary author Harlowe Brisbane, the ultimate authority on feminism, women's bodies, and other gay-sounding stuff, is sure to help her figure out this whole Puerto Rican lesbian thing. Except Harlowe's white. And not from the Bronx. And she definitely doesn't have all the answers . . .

In a summer bursting with queer brown dance parties, a sexy fling with a motorcycling librarian, and intense explorations of race and identity, Juliet learns what it means to come out--to the world, to her family, to herself.

  • A must read for queer women

    HPB S. - 4 years 11 months ago

This is an absolute must read for any queer woman, especially queer women of color. I say that as a queer woman of color myself. Gabby Rivera is an incredible writer. This book will make you reflect back on your first love, the inclusiveness and intersectionality of your feminism, and your friendships. It's a great book overall, and I'd recommend it to all.

This book ended up being completely different than I was expecting; it’s not like any other YA book that I’ve read. Rivera really didn’t hold back with this one, and did not sugarcoat anything. At first, I was worried that the topic of white feminism wouldn’t be brought up, or if it was, it wouldn’t be handled well. Too many times I have consumed some form of media that does not deal with white feminism well at all. So, it was really refreshing to see the way Rivera went right after it. She called it out of what it is and did not let white feminists off the hook. On a lighter note, it also has a super cute romance in it that made me smile like an idiot while I was reading. Juliet is also one of the most endearing characters I have read, and this book left me wanting to read more about her journey to discover who she is. #RequiredReading

  • Piercingly Honest Teen Fiction

    Jennifer L. - 5 years 11 months ago

Juliet Takes a Breath is an absolutely stunning teen fiction novel, honest and blunt and overwhelmingly gorgeous. The story of a young woman discovering her complicated place in the world--coping with confusion and changes--not just within herself, but in her relationships with friends and family. I'm not usually one to cry in the middle of a book, but there were places this character got under my skin and left me winded and tearful. Beautiful writing carries this powerful story forward and makes it absolutely unforgettable, and I recommend the book fiercely for anyone who has ever felt lost themselves. Juliet's journey is so sincerely personal that I feel as though I know her and honored to have been along for the ride.
