In the first of the original trilogy by Marie Lu, we witness the plummets of the once United States of America. Because of massive flooding, the eastern shores of North America have been definitively submerged and the onslaught of overcrowding caused the split of all states. Now, on the western side, the Republic tests children at the age of eleven to train them for war; June is the Republic's prodigy and Day is their most wanted criminal. In unlikely circumstances, June and Day have to escape the manipulative reaches of the Republic and figure out what causes the cyclical plagues throughout the failing country. They have to give up everything they have to unravel the conspiracy; and they may set off a civil war in doing so.
HPB Staff ReviewI don't know about you, but I'm kind of over dystopian novels. Sure, the concept was cool in the beginning, but now it's to a point where I feel that pretty much every other book takes place in a dystopian setting, particularly when it comes to teen novels. As a result, I almost didn't read the Legend series by Marie Lu. I decided to purchase the first book on a whim one day, and now that I've finished it I can honestly say that I'm very glad I gave it a chance. This book is told from the perspectives of two different characters, and I connected with both of them instantly. Their struggles are real; it's easy to empathize with them, and Lu does an excellent job at building her very believable dystopian setting--which, by the way, takes place in the US. The plot was straightforward and easy to follow, but it was one of those books that is so engaging that I felt I just had to keep reading to see what would happen next. Don't let this gem get lost among the rest!
HPB Staff ReviewI absolutely love this book, completely obsessed with the characters!!! #springpicks
I love this book! It is such an original, I've never seen anything like it. I definitely recommend it to teens/preteens. Thank you Marie Lu for being such a good craftswoman.
This book was amazing! Marie Lu does an amazing job of making the characters interesting and different from each other. I would recommend this book to teens who are trying to do some #SummerReading and actually want to read a good book.
