For those interested in Russian history, or just magnificent complex people of history: This biography of Grigorii Rasputin tells a gripping story of a Russian peasant who maneuvered his way through Russia all the way to the top under the banner of a religious holy man, and becomes a lead advisor to Tsar Nicholas and Tsarina Alexandra. Of course there can be no story about Rasputin without the magic and the myth involved and Alex De Jonge does not shy away from the difficult to explain topics of Rasputin's life including his miraculous healings. After reading this biography one gets a much better grasp on who Rasputin was, rather than the myth of him, and the truth is sometimes even more amazing than the myth. More than just the story of Rasputin, Alex De Jonge also illustrates Russia as a whole, giving a clear picture of the environment that very much created Rasputin. Highly recommend!
