From the author of the award nominated Gods of Jade and Shadow is this interesting novel set in the Mexico during fifties about a wealthy socialite that must visit a newly married cousin on a remote estate in the mountains. Part Crimson Peak mixed with the Yellow Wallpaper this book is a great addition to the gothic genre and soon to be an addition to your streaming television line up. Moreno-Garcia has a lovely writing style that's easy to read and yet her books are wildly diverse. I'm excited to see what she writes next!
HPB Staff ReviewSufficiently creepy and weird, this book does the gothic novel genre justice. From the very beginning, I was hooked in the premise of the socialite protagonist, Noemi, sent to investigate the strange letters from her cousin in the middle of nowhere. The greatest part of the book was the author's writing that makes you want to continue reading until the mystery is been solved, the strong female protagonist, the extremely creepy atmosphere and characters, and the smart incorporation of culture into the novel. Overall, this is a must read for any gothic genre enthusiasts or anyone interested in delving into the genre like me. #SpringPicks
I was late to the game on this book and it did not disappoint. Mexican Gothic offers readers great characters and a story that unravels slowly and then suddenly. I stretched out the last chunk of this book because I wasn't quite ready for it to end. Also, I highly recommend listening to a "Dark Academia" playlist while reading. #springpicks
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers. So glad i bought it
I loved this book and couldn't put it down. The characters are well written, especially the protagonist. She's a well rounded female character with strengths and weaknesses. The pacing, dialogue, and plot itself are great too. I highly recommend it if you love a creepy story with mystery unfolding.
