Overview

THE FIRST MERCY THOMPSON NOVEL

Moon Called is the novel that introduced Patricia Briggs's Mercy Thompson to the world and launched a #1 bestselling phenomenon...

Mercy Thompson is a shapeshifter, and while she was raised by werewolves, she can never be one of them, especially after the pack ran her off for having a forbidden love affair. So she's turned her talent for fixing cars into a business and now runs a one-woman mechanic shop in the Tri-Cities area of Washington State.

But Mercy's two worlds are colliding. A half-starved teenage boy arrives at her shop looking for work, only to reveal that he's a newly changed werewolf--on the run and desperately trying to control his animal instincts. Mercy asks her neighbor Adam Hauptman, the Alpha of the local werewolf pack, for assistance.

But Mercy's act of kindness has unexpected consequences that leave her no choice but to seek help from those she once considered family--the werewolves who abandoned her...

"In the increasingly crowded field of kick-ass supernatural heroines, Mercy stands out as one of the best."--Locus

  • Mystery with an animal instinct

If you like your mystery with a wild side, then this is the book for you. Mercy Thompson is a preternatural creature apart from the usual suspects. A skinwalker by birth she does not have to wait for the call of the moon to transform. When someone new comes into town to threaten those closest to her she must trust her instincts and throw herself into the middle of pack politics to save herself and those around her.

Moon Called was a highly enjoyable read. If you like reading urban fantasy, the Mercy Thompson series is a good place to lay your bookmark. Mercy is a tough lady with a dab hand at fixing cars and a knack for getting into trouble with werewolves, vampires, and the Fae. She also happens to be a coyote shape-shifter. I love Mercy because she is a strong but realistic protagonist. Sure, she gets into trouble, but she knows she still needs to get up early in the morning for work. When property gets damaged, she knows it will be a tight-budget month. Most book plots ignore small true-to-life details like that. I really appreciate the author's respect of her reader's intelligence regarding this fact. The characters are well developed and fun to get to know. There is plenty of supernatural suspense, and even a bit of sexual tension. As I said before, a truly enjoyable read.
