Mouse Guard: Fall 1152, by David Petersen, brings all the reverence and adventure of Brian Jacques's "Redwall" books to a graphic medium. Unlike the other award-winning mouse themed graphic novel "The Mice Templar," by Brian J.L. Glass, "Mouse Guard" successfully conveys the diminutive stature of the mice in a world full of predators and perils. And, while both comics are epic in scale, David Petersen's writing for "Mouse Guard" has a timeless feeling to it that harkens back to such classics as "The Hobbit." The story follows guardsmice Lieam, Kenzie, and Saxon as they uncover a plot to overthrow the Mouse Guard in Lockhaven, and the fabled warrior The Black Axe returns to aid the three heroes. If this sounds at all familiar, it should, as David Petersen takes many common themes from fantasy literature and boils them down into their most basic elements. What makes "Mouse Guard" even more incredible is that Petersen conveys the enormity of the story without alienating potentially younger readers. This series is an excellent addition to any young adult graphic library.
HPB Staff ReviewThis is a wonderful story which captures the smallness of the mouse world and then makes their problems seem gigantic. David Peterson creates an immersive and compelling world in which he juxtaposes many of the themes of high fantasy with the diminutive perspective of mice. I will definitely be picking up the rest of the series.
