Stephen King's latest thriller series revolves around an unlikely trio of misfits who come together to solve one of the most horrific crimes their town has ever seen. Two years prior, someone drove their Mercedes into a crowd of people waiting in line for a job fair, killing twenty and injuring dozens more. The killer drives away and isn't heard from again. That is until he gets restless and wants to cause some more mischief. He begins harassing the retired detective who was on his case but was never able to close it. The twists and turns are exciting and the characters are quirky and totally relatable. One of my recent favorites from master storyteller King and the first in a trilogy.
HPB Staff ReviewMr. Mercedes starts off with a bang and just kicks off from there. A great example of King's premier work, with one of the best set of characters he's had in a long time. A great plot, superb pacing, and just an awesome read. Can't wait for the next one!
HPB Staff ReviewThere are no supernatural forces at work in Stephen King's Mr. Mercedes. A nod to the classic cat-and-mouse thrillers of the past, Mr. Mercedes takes a familiar noir format and turns it on its ear. You've got the hard-boiled ex-detective, Bill Hodges, who isn't taking kindly to retirement. You've got Mr. Mercedes himself, who plows through a crowd of down-on-their-luck employment-seekers in a stolen Mercedes, and is itching to kill again. The stage is set for a familiar race against time: the ex-cop pitted against the plotting psychotic. For every appearance of a fedora or a revolver, there's a chat room session or a boy-band concert. It's easy to enjoy this offering of familiar noir with a newfangled twist, from the likes of an always enjoyable master storyteller. Check it out, and look for the sequel which is out now!
