The Galactic Empire has reigned supreme for twelve thousand years, and now its failing. Only the renowned psychohistorian Hari Seldon can see into the bleak future where barbarism, ignorance, and feuding among the outlying planets lasts throughout the galaxy into thirty-thousand years of dark ages. To combat this end, Seldon amasses the greatest minds in the entire galaxy on an undeveloped world at the end of the galaxy to lay down all knowledge into the Encyclopedia Galactica. This planet is to be known as the Foundation. One of the greatest science fiction novels Ive read in a long time.
HPB Staff ReviewInspired by a reading of Gibbon's "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," Asimov's "Foundation" tells the story of the fall of a Galactic Empire and the subsequent rise of a successor state, the eponymous Foundation. This is Sci-Fi at it's finest, a work that presents a unique concept - psychohistory, an extension of the trends and forces theory of history that purports to predict human behavior with a statistician's exactness - and weaves it into a narrative that is both compelling and exciting. In this, the first work of a series, Asimov introduces us to psychohistory, and how it may be employed to guide the minuscule and utterly vulnerable Foundation to galactic hegemony and beyond. While the characters tend to be a bit flat, and the narrative fairly dialogue heavy, they do serve a much greater whole in painting an extremely fascinating picture. If you are a fan of sci-fi, this is required reading; if not, this may be the work that introduces you to a wonderful genre packed with philosophy and questions about humanity and its place in the stars.
