Pillars of the Earth is a story unlike any other. The breadth of emotions it brings out is unparalleled- one moment you’re happy, excited and another you’re sad and shaken. I read this book as quickly as I would read a thriller because you’re always hungry for what’s going to happen next. So hungry I purchase the following book, as I’m not ready to let go of Kingsbridge just yet. #SpringPicks
This an excellently written book with all kinds of details about 12th century life. This is the first Ken Follett book that I have read, and I found it to be a real ”page turner”. Lord William (the bad guy) does some things that are pretty abusive in the book that might offend some people, so let this be a warning. Otherwise, a very good book that I recommend.
I loved this book. The characters are so well developed and there was so much information about them. I disliked it when Tom was killed. I had hoped to see more of him. I found it interesting when man discovered how to make arches instead of flat roofs. So much to discover. I felt like the characters were family and I missed them when the book as over.
This is one of those big doorstops that you wish was even bigger when you get to the end. I've always enjoyed Follett's thrillers, 'The Key to Rebecca' and 'Eye of the Needle' especially, but this one is so much more. Yes, it ends up frequently in the Mystery/Thriller section but it's actually a brilliant work of historical fiction. The plot revolves around the building of a cathedral and that's all I'm going to tell you.
HPB Staff ReviewThe beginning of a great epic. Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Probably some of the best historical fiction ever written.
