Fun and fast twist on the superhero tale - good for teenage readers. Filled with imaginative twists and turns and a well-built world with an interesting twist on the superhero genre. Steelheart is a fairly fast paced book. Told from David's perspective, there is a lot of inner monologue but Sanderson doesn't get bogged down with the hero's vengeance or angst over his life. He allows David to continually act. This draws the reader down a story that could have stalled out, but the action keeps it alive.
HPB Staff ReviewThe United States hasn't been the same since Calamity arrived. With its arrival came Epic power. Those who received it were forever known as Epics. But the Epics were no heroes. They control everything and everyone. Steelheart rules Newcago, what used to be Chicago, and David Charleston knows this firsthand. When he was young, David's father was ruthlessly murdered by Steelheart. He has the ability to change matter into steel, the ability to fly, and impenetrable skin. In other words, he's unstoppable. Or so the world thinks. However, David is the only one who has witnessed Steelheart bleed. He doesn't know why or how, but that memory is forever attached to the one of his father dying, and he won't soon forget either. For the next ten years, David dedicates his life to gaining as much information as he possibly can about the Epics, hoping to be accepted into a battalion of freedom fighters known as The Reckoners. They hunt down and kill Epics, and David wants nothing more than to join them and get revenge on the most powerful Epic in the world.
