Overview

Simone de Beauvoir's essential masterwork is a powerful analysis of the Western notion of "woman," and a revolutionary exploration of inequality and otherness. Unabridged in English for the first time, this long-awaited edition reinstates significant portions of the original French text that were cut in the first English translation. Vital and groundbreaking, Beauvoir's pioneering and impressive text remains as pertinent today as when it was first published, and will continue to provoke and inspire generations of men and women to come.

  • A foundational book for both feminism & existentialism

    David M. - 7 years 3 months ago

Feminism has gone through many incarnations over the last 60 years - sometimes it's hard to keep up with it all. Are we at the end of the 3rd wave of feminism or the beginning of the 4th? For anyone who wants to get a better grasp of where these ideas all came from, Simone de Beauvoir's treatise "The Second Sex" is THE foundational text to read. Simone de Beauvoir, the lifelong partner-in-crime of famous French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, gives a historical and philosophical account of the ways that gender has affected human culture from prehistoric times, through the industrial revolution, and up to the dawn of the information age. This is a long book and it's not an "easy" read by any means. But if you're willing to take the time to get through this brilliant and all-encompassing work, you'll find a wealth of ideas that give a deep understanding not just of the history of women's struggles, but also of industrialization, socialism, religion, philosophy, biology, myth, folklore, and almost everything in between. De Beauvoir's writing is intelligent without being dry, funny without being caustic, and serious without being preachy. She famously writes: "one is not born, but rather becomes a woman". So often in life, we have expectations forced on us of who or what we should be. De Beauvoir's book is one tool among many to pry away at those expectations and discover a truer sort of freedom, based on free will and embracing the best of what life has to offer.
