While James Baldwin work in this book may seem to jump around, that is probably because it written from a collection of article, letters and essays. Regardless, the entire criticism or observation tries to provide a path to understanding the Black American reflection on where his place is in American society. Obviously for James Baldwin he was not sure it was in this country, as he moved to France and spent much of his mature life there, which he tries to explain, along with his return to America. A very detailed and personal book.
An excellent collection of Baldwin's thoughts about race in America including his how personal experience. It's very helpful in understanding the climate in America today.
