Overview

What is Violent Communication?
If "violent" means acting in ways that result in hurt or harm, then much of how we communicate--judging others, bullying, having racial bias, blaming, finger pointing, discriminating, speaking without listening, criticizing others or ourselves, name-calling, reacting when angry, using political rhetoric, being defensive or judging who's "good/bad" or what's "right/wrong" with people--could indeed be called "violent communication."
What is Nonviolent Communication? Nonviolent Communication is the integration of four things:
- Consciousness: a set of principles that support living a life of compassion, collaboration, courage, and authenticity

- Language: understanding how words contribute to connection or distance

- Communication: knowing how to ask for what we want, how to hear others even in disagreement, and how to move toward solutions that work for all

- Means of influence: sharing "power with others" rather than using "power over others"
Nonviolent Communication serves our desire to do three things:
- Increase our ability to live with choice, meaning, and connection

- Connect empathically with self and others to have more satisfying relationships

- Sharing of resources so everyone is able to benefit

  • A life-changing approach

    Jennifer F. - 3 years 7 months ago

Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg is a book and a methodology that changed this reader's life and relationships. It offers listening and speaking tools for empathic communication that recognizes the needs and experiences of all parties, allowing the user to step away from the inflammatory, judgmental language (so prevalent in our lives) that heightens conflict and misunderstanding. Specific behaviors and their effects are acknowledged, feelings and values are owned, and needs are requested/spelled out. Though the communicative format can seem a bit formulaic, one need not stick to it exactly to effect greater mutual understanding and greater confidence in challenging situations. Highly recommended.

  • Speaking the peace

    Aunna H. - 3 years 11 months ago

This book presents simply and clearly how to effectively communicate with others in a way that fulfills the needs for both the speaker and the listener. Whether you are looking for peace in the workplace or with your family, Rosenberg presents ideas that will help you express yourself and listen to others in a productive way that helps your relationships grow. I like the way he uses real experiences from his own life and works in clinical psychology to illustrate the ideas he presents. If you are looking to create more peace in your life, check this book out.
