Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg is a book and a methodology that changed this reader's life and relationships. It offers listening and speaking tools for empathic communication that recognizes the needs and experiences of all parties, allowing the user to step away from the inflammatory, judgmental language (so prevalent in our lives) that heightens conflict and misunderstanding. Specific behaviors and their effects are acknowledged, feelings and values are owned, and needs are requested/spelled out. Though the communicative format can seem a bit formulaic, one need not stick to it exactly to effect greater mutual understanding and greater confidence in challenging situations. Highly recommended.
HPB Staff ReviewThis book presents simply and clearly how to effectively communicate with others in a way that fulfills the needs for both the speaker and the listener. Whether you are looking for peace in the workplace or with your family, Rosenberg presents ideas that will help you express yourself and listen to others in a productive way that helps your relationships grow. I like the way he uses real experiences from his own life and works in clinical psychology to illustrate the ideas he presents. If you are looking to create more peace in your life, check this book out.
