  • The funniest travel book I've read.

    Phillip D. - 6 years 9 months ago

This was the first of Bryson's books that I read. After living in the UK for 20 years, Bryson, originally from Iowa, decides to return to America. Taking one final trip around England, he rediscovers and remembers the wonders of his first strange and hilarious encounters. He never makes fun of the Brits (of which I am one) but his fascination and love for the island and its people, and their quirks, comes across in every chapter. I first read it before moving to America and it became clear to me that, although we share similar roots and a common language, The United States and The United Kingdom are very different countries. The first time I read it was on a commuter train to London and I burst out laughing on several occasions. Which, if you knew me, is rare. Partly, if not mostly, because I see myself and my fellow Brits in the writing and have to nod to myself and think, "yup, that's us." If you like this book, also read A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson.
