Never has a book made my heart explode like this. I soaked this book up like a sponge. Hoover has a way of writing that pulls you in and doesn't let you go. Her characters are flawed, complex, and intriguing. This isn't your typical romance. Be prepared for a journey.
HPB Staff ReviewIn Sleepless in Seattle, the characters agree to meet up once. One Day focuses on one particular day every year, but the two people still interact throughout the year like normal. But November 9 is one-of-a-kind. Ben the Writer meets Fallon the Transient, and it’s “insta-love…When two characters meet and supposedly have this great connection right off the bat.” “What if we meet up again next year on the same day…We’ll do it for five years. Same date, same time, same place. We’ll pick up where we left off tonight, but only for the day…We’ll meet every November 9th. Absolutely no contact in between, though. November 9th or nothing…We’ll both get to experience life like we’re supposed to at this age, but we also get to get with each other once a year. It’s the best of both worlds” and the title of their story! In the meantime, Ben gives Fallon “Just three assignments. Get laughed at once a week, go on five dates, kiss at least two of them. Piece of cake.” Fallon’s assignment to Ben: “Our book. What’s the title going to be? November 9.… November 9 is the anniversary of the fire” that scarred Fallon’s body. It’s also the same day Dylan Thomas died…and the date of Ben’s mother’s suicide. But for both characters, “Being able to look forward to seeing you on this date makes me not dread the anniversary as much as I used to…with little excuse to mourn.” But when Fallon stumbles across Ben’s manuscript and discovers he holds the secret to her scars, “It took four years for me to fall in love with him. It only took four pages to stop.” Fallon learns to “accept myself for who I am and be grateful that I’m alive…A body is simply a package for the true gift inside. And you are full of gifts. Selflessness, kindness, compassion. All the things that matter. Youth and beauty fade. Human decency doesn’t.” Will November 9 be scarred forever or will it end in “the most book-worthy marriage proposal in history…Spoiler alert. They lived happily ever after…Not the end. Far from it.”
My first read of Colleen Hoover and I loved it! This book has me hooked from the start and made me feel different emotions throughout. Highly recommended.
This book was beautiful. Chef's Kiss. A complete masterpiece. I knew from the very first line I was going to love this book and I couldn't have been more correct. I read this book in one sitting because I was just so completely and utterly mesmerized by Hoover's writing. The story was told so beautifully and there was just the right mix of romance, excitement, and sadness to create the perfect romance novel. Typically I don't enjoy reading insta-love novels, because I don't like how unrealistic they are, but this book was perfectly paced. I was laughing along with the characters when they were happy and crying along with when they were sad and I experienced shocks right along with them. Hoover's writing allowed you to feel the twists and turns of the story just as strongly as the characters themselves did, creating one of the best romances I've ever read. (And to answer your questions: yes, I'm in love with Benton James Kessler and yes, I will obsessively read every other book Colleen Hoover has released.) #SpringPicks
